Beginning in 1995, discussions were held with various organisations with a view to making gifts. Most recently, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester and Southampton City Art Gallery became the recipients of two bequests. The Pallant House Gift includes one and half thousand books on art history, aesthetics and criticism together with art periodicals and books illustrated by artists, some of great rarity and many of them richly annotated.
Since then the Trust has worked to find a balance between selling works through the dealer system, in which works are sold on the open market, and negotiating bequests to major public UK collections that have either a strong commitment to modern British art, to education in the visual arts, or to both. With the help of an experienced dealer, Gordon Samuel of Osborne Samuel, the Trust’s objectives have been realised by ensuring that some works have reached the market to raise funds, while others have been included in gifts to public bodies.
